#stayintune with @djfreedomlives daily!
2016 has had a lot of great and not-so great moments. We have seen a shocking and disturbing election year, celebs returning to the essence and more award ceremonies that simply rub the backs of industry favorites. This DJ is happy to celebrate the goodness of music producers who made dancehall POP! Sevn Thomas ("Work" by Rihanna), Jr. Blender ("Cold Water" by Major Lazer), Supa Dups ("Not Nice" by PARTYNEXTDOOR and "Controlla" by Drake) plus Cashmere Cat ("Luv" by Tory Lanez). There were many other great examples by Drake ("One Dance"), the explosion of Afro Pop into the mainstream and millions of views on YouTube plus the continuing growth of Caribbean influence on pop music (Justin Bieber with "Sorry" and others), Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Maroon 5 and Shakira to name a few others. There were dozens of songs that fit into the dancehall frame that had pop success. Hip-hop artists dug in, house, dance and edm artists under the guise of "tropical house" were all dancehall influenced and even gospel and country felt the island vibe influence. Watch for my best of 2016 next month...the last celebration of music beyond my own exploits in the "Mix To Go Awards." #dancehall #reggae #Caribbean#goodmusic #islandvibes #afropop#soca #top40 #Jamaica #remixes#MixToGo #djfreedomlives
