For the grown and mature, this is the ORIGINAL black owned and operated R&B and old school station. They were the first to play house music on a commercial station with Timmy Regisford (Kiss FM responded with Tony Humphries). They had Frankie Crocker the party rocker ("When Frankie's in the house, everybody gets 2 pieces!" by Millie Jackson) and I can go on.
I had the pleasure of working there in the late 80s to 90s with Dr. Bob Lee (still there!) when he oversaw a community outreach with over 2 dozen DJs. We gave out t shirts (remember the "Kiss Off" campaign?!) and hats, key chains and other promotional goodies. I slipped my own mixtapes in too. In the 80s DJ Marley Marl rocked hip-hop jams with Mr. Magic and featured interviews and insight to the culture that gave hip hop its first credible voice. Red Alert was on KissFM and even HE spins now at WBLS sometimes along with Bedrock and Doug E. Fresh. This is the only station that also features a true Caribbean show on Saturdays (11pm to about 2 or 3am, usually live at S.O.B.'s NYC) and Sundays, 9pm to 12am. Dahved Levy is still rocking you, rocking you! That is, if you like reggae, soca, afro pop and even zouk sometimes. The ONLY real Caribbean show on a commercial radio station in the country! Great memories...and WBLS-FM is still one of the best commercial radio stations in the world. This wasn't a paid endorsement by the way, nor was it a favor or a request. This is the station I grew up listening to and they are still going strong! Long live black radio in NYC...and you can get it online anywhere! In this day and time, you can hear DJ Freedom on Urban Movement Radio Monday to Wednesdays, and Fridays 5-7pm est. on Tuesday I produce a show with Valiety as the hostess! www.urbanmovementradio.com #throwback #Thursday #WBLS #DJFreedomLives #rnb #oldschool #mrmagic #hip-hop #NYC #legendary #blackradio #knowyourhistory #backintheday #goodmusic #mixtogo #stayintune #valiety
