#DJDreedomLives with Daily Updates!!
Good day everyone. Welcome back. Hope you have been having a great day thus far (or night, depending on what part of the world you are in). This article was originally published January 20, 2017. It is revised only slightly but perfectly captures the mood of that day. Today for some is a day of regret (the "new boss" being sworn in. For others it is a day of celebration. For me it is a great day to be alive and share positive energy with you about things that are going on in the world of DJ Freedom. National DJ Day is here and it came as a quiet storm...because I didn't know about it! A good friend had it posted to her page on Facebook (thanks Gina!) but not much is known about the origin or of any events taking place supporting it. I am speaking with 2 groups that own a website and Facebook so I will keep you posted. As a DJ who is in various DJ circles-house, hip-hop, Caribbean, Old School, Latin and even EDM-I am going to do my part to see what is possible. I know a few of you (my peers) are up for an event we all take part in building on. Think "We The People" on this. Speaking of people power, allow this to sink in. We in the business of entertainment have the power to affect real change. We don't need to wait for a political figure or someone famous to step up on our behalf when we want things done. Got some ideas but you aren't sure how to express yourself? Let's get in a huddle and sort it out. We the people will be the change we can believe in...because we know the answer ro the question: who will take the weight? y=self (Y.E.S.) is the answer...we can and we will. Our world is changing-because WE are changing. We are always evolving as people but it is REALLY happening now where you can see it. Technology has made it easier for us to communicate; I am writing this on a keyboard that connects me to the world through a signal out of my cell phone. It is fast and mostly flawless. That to me is amazing. To my millennial readers it is just a day in the life...but if you ask your parents and grandparents they will tell you: the world is definitely different that we ever imagined it could be. All of this to say I never thought there would be a day for DJs. As important as they are, DJs are the very reason you know what you know about many songs. Radio used to chase DJs and what they played when those songs had impact on the dancefloor. Today, DJs chase radio gigs and work with radio stations to play the most popular songs. The overall feeling is NOT to take chances because that will mean "your job." There is among EDM and house music DJs a mindset that dictates the freedom to play what you want...that is what I grew up on and still represent to this day. If it sounds good, a DJ is the person who knows and will represent! He wasn't a hip hop DJ, although if he called himself that it was just in how he/she played the songs...possibly the agression of his/her style. If he was a "downtown DJ" he played to a more abstract audience-maybe some European influences, early electro, in the 80's and 90's rave, Detroit techno, Chicago house and acid house...hip house and soulful house in New York City...smooth, Latin influenced club sounds in Miami...every city had their thing and the DJ was in the middle of it all. As a DJ you already KNOW this is something I am going to push for. I am speaking with DJs as the ones who will have the most say in how this will fly or not, but I am not going to limit the conversation to DJs...it will also be people who love music-the fans, as well as the business of music-execs and yes, even radio. Get involved. Let me know what you think and be sure to watch my website and daily updates for more details. #yeswewill #nationaldjday #DJ#powertothepeople #fairplay#goodmusic #sober #soulcontroller#community #peacefuljourney#happytobehere #mastermix#Mondaymotivation
